Restored version of a 1926 silent film classic, "Mother" ('Mat') directed by Vsevolod Pudovkin, a colleague of Eisenstein's. Based partly on a Maxim Gorky novel, it deals with a family caught up in the abortive 1905 Russian revolution.

In the darkness of the theatre-hall, eager eyes watching in earnest; the sound of a piano, an orchestra, the voice of a reader or a gramophone playing. The murmur of the audience and its interaction with the moving images transform the experience into something noisy and extravagant, unique, the sonority of a new art-form.We find ourselves today surrounded by these experiences, immersed in an explosion of audiovisual sensations; our original silence has been lost, the vitality of imagination supplanted by the skills of technique. We reconstruct a performance and are tired by its self-absorption. Revisited Silence looks for contemporary artists whose aim is to interpret our times through the works of film-makers who considered that sound was in the essence of movement: music was with them from the start.
