On three nights in July 1975, the Montreux Jazz Festival recalled the 1940s and '50s glory days of jazz impresario extraordinaire Norman Granz's Jazz At The Philharmonic. In 1973, Granz (b. 1918) founded Pablo Records, for which these exciting performances were recorded. Typical of JATP, the jam session format and bright-to-blazing tempos were favored.
There are crowd-pleasing jams featuring such distinguished JATP alumni--and Jazz Hall-of-Famers--as Roy Eldridge, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Carter, Oscar Peterson, and the insuperable Ella Fitzgerald (whose patented scatting on "The Man I Love" is especially musicianly). They are joined by other veteran, inveterate jammers (and, in many cases, frequent Pablo participants) including Clark Terry, Zoot Sims, Milt Jackson, Tommy Flanagan, Joe Pass, and that incomparable rhythmatist, Count Basie.
More than merely crowd-pleasing, these mainstream-swing-to-bop performances show off all the artists at their swinging best.
