During the first part of the 50's, the mambo caused an authentic furor in the New York ballrooms and dance-halls, among which the Palladium was the most popular and most famous, so much so that it became known as the "House of the Mambo". Situated on Broadway and 53rd Street, it featured Tito Puente's Orchestra as the main attraction, playing to a full house every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday night, the latter a specially popular night which was given the name MAMBOSCOPE. At these memorable Wednesday happenings, the entrance fee entitled the patron to mambo instructions early in the evening, plus the participation in a contest for mambo dancers, and from 11 p.m until midnight there was a show by Tito Puente's Orchestra with professional dancers.
