In the process of writing these liner notes, some questions arose: how can I present this music in an attractive and interesting way? Does music actually need any kind of presentation, or is the music itself enough? I don’t know the answer to this, but I do think we are all moved somehow by romanticism and idealization… Anyway, I would rather just speak a little about what this album means to me, hoping that this will be interesting enough.
The 7 originals were composed in the last 7 or 8 years. Although it is quite a large timespan, I decided to include older as well as newer songs because I feel there is a vibe, a common spirit present in all of them. I wouldn’t know exactly how to describe it, but I think it has something to do with facing challenges, growing by creating something out of nothing, and overcoming personal insecurities.
I think that, along with Codina and Genius, we have been able to create something out of nothing. We found a way of putting together our different personalities and cooking them in the same pot. You will decide if the result is nice or not, but I can say that it felt good to share that space and intimacy while playing together. I would like to thank them for always believing in my music.
I decided to include one standard, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, to pay tribute to the musical tradition that has taught and keeps teaching me so much about music and about myself. It was Codina’s favorite ballad when the album was recorded.
I would like to thank the musicians’ community in Basel, where this album was recorded and where I experienced so many wonderful things. I was constantly inspired by other musicians and friends (I could name them, but the list would be very long) who have helped me in many ways. This album would probably not exist if it weren’t for them. I am also thankful for all of my friends, family and loved ones in Vigo. They are a constant source of inspiration and they are always supporting me.
I think all these ideas, people, concepts, are in a way present in the music, and that is what makes it more interesting and rich. Music can carry many things with it, and I believe we can somehow grasp a little of that richness when listening to it. I hope this music says something to you, and that it was worth buying this album.
