Pete Rugolo was not so much a tunesmith as he was a sound-smith, an inventor of new moods, of striking new colors, arresting combinations. His imagination roves to the horizons of possibilities in extracting fresh voicings from standard and familiar instruments. While the impact in the ear of his sounds is that of a conversation-stopper, his techniques are subtle. Here is music with the most willing of hi-fi sound and with all the available tone colors that could conceivably be derived from the varied and large instrumentation.

This wonderful 2-CD set contains in chronological order all the recordings Pete Rugolo did fronting his amazing studio orchestra in 1956, made up by some of the greatest jazz performers of the Hollywood jazz scene.
