Paul Olenick began playing the trombone when he was seven years old. Paul's teachers have included Jack Gale, Dave Taylor, Conrad Herwig, Steve Turre, Doug Elliot and Garry Dial. He has performed with Aretha Franklin, Robin Eubanks, Nelson Riddle Orchestra, Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Les Elgart, Ray Anthony, Billy May Orchestra, Keter Betts, Charlie Persip and Terrell Stafford among others. In addition to touring North America and Europe, Paul has played in venues ranging from The Blue Note, Birdland, Knitting Factory and Blues Alley to the Kennedy Center, New York and Philadelphia Fringe Festivals, and several of the International Association of Jazz Educators Conferences.
In 1993 Paul was honored with the Thad Jones Memorial Scholarship, Stan Getz/Clifford Brown Fellowship and National ARTS Scholarship. He was selected to take part in the JAS Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Colony in 1999 which was made into a documentary for BET. Paul is living in New York City since 1997 and cut this session in 2005, a fine effort which features very special soloist presence of alto sax Chris Cheek.
"Trombonist Paul Olenick, with edgy intensity, slides from the horn's subbasementto its roof."
Sharon McDaniel -Palm Beach Post
"Olenick swings loosely...The gruff trombone solo by Olenick is the highlight of the piece."
Frank Rubolino -Cadence
