In the beginning of 2007 I got a call from Granollers jazz Festival asking me to propose them a project. At first I wasnt sure, but I quickly realized that this was the perfect opportunity to make one of my dreams come true. Id had a fantasy swirling in my mind for the last couple of years: to form a band that would play my compositions.
I had been taking a composition course that had inspired me to fulfill my dream: to sit down and write my own tunes. So now I started thinking about who would be the best musicians to realize my second dream: to play them! I knew the answer right away.
On the bass: Omer, who has been playing with me for a few years in the OAM
TRIO. He guarantees you a solid foundation and, on top of that, has no problem with latin rhythms or odd meters. And of course no one can deny his powerful swing. On the sax: Seamus, my roommate in Brooklyn for three years back when we would play for hours and hours. We know each other perfectly, so I was sure he would give me a very warm sound and some brilliant improvisation.
Finally it wasnt tough either to know who would be on piano. I needed someone who knew the jazz tradition deeply and also had a command of latin rhythms. Ed was the perfect person, Id met him in the gos during a tour and immediately Id loved his beautiful sound and subtle touch on the piano. I knew he was the last piece I was looking for to balance the quartet.
We gave two concerts together before going into the studio where we recorded this CD, a work where youll hear not only my compositions but also one tune by Seamus and another by Ed.
This project is the culmination of two of my dreams come true: to write my own music and to play it with such a special band. This incredible experience accompanied other dreams, like improvising on my vibraphone, having two daughters and making a living doing what I most like to do, living where I live... In other words I go on dreaming, and Im having a lot of fun at it!
