Leonard Feather was the producer of the two unusual and highly regarded Metro Jazz LPs compiled in this CD. Recorded in New York in 1958, both represent a two-way meeting as protracted in the planning as they were successful in the studio. The Mitchell brothers: Whitey (bass) and Red (bass & piano), and trumpeter Blue Mitchell, are featured on the first date, along with André Previn, who, as part of his trio, brought the California-based Red temporarily back to NY. Trombonist Frank Rehak and baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams contributed greatly with their solos. Looking back on the second date, Feather remembered that It took a long time to corral all the Jones brothers: Thad Jones, Hank Jones, Elvin Jones, along with bassist Eddie Jones, in a recording studio at one time. The overall feeling of this session was that of a long-delayed and very welcome family reunion in which three major musical talents were able to demonstrate a natural and understandable affinity.
