Superb craftsmanship and meticulous attention to the details of not only repertoire, but also orchestration and performance, were among the marks of the Larry Elgart band at its peak. All of these qualities are evident in this fresh, sparkling treatment of a well-selected group of standards and originals that features the band’s distinctive stylish arrangements. The charts are clean, uncluttered, uncomplicated but highly effective, with a bright, highly danceable beat, and the sound has a rare vibrancy because these recordings capture so effectively the silky-velvety texture of their live music.
Caught in the studio, both these albums, Sophisticated Sixties and The Shape of the Sounds to Come epitomise what the band sounded like when it went on the road to play for dances and concerts. And it’s the sound that made the Elgart band such a favourite for both dancers and listeners.
Sensational
"The Shape Of Sounds To Come" is one of the finest big band recordings ever. Great musicianship, finest of engineering (no gimmicks), a treasure.
No over written arrangements. Superb.
