"The album is decidedly high concept."
-Tom Greenlan -The New York City Jazz Records
"If you're not clear what's the difference between life sound pictures and just regular compositions, the answer comes pretty quickly into this astonishing New York-recorded set from the young Slovene who's already well embarked on a recording career, with several discs on Goga, Sensor and Session Work, and the wonderful Abstract Society on Storyville with Vijay Iyer. Pukl also runs what he calls his Virus Quartet but this is his New York band and a big step towards greater visibility.
What makes a life sound picture is the amount of experience and emotion that can be squeezed into a tune, without outward evidence of squeezing. Pukl doesn't emote vacuously. Everything he does is in the service of the composition, but packed with musical learning and high intelligence. In Harris and Rogers, Sanders and Royston, he has musicians capable of staying with him and suggesting other routes. The guitarist in particular is a renewed revelation here, his ringing accompaniment on Last Autumn further evidence of his enormous musicality. Valdana's guest spot on The Journey To The One is almost a doppelganger performance, so sympathetic are the two horns. The long suite falters here and there. The solo Lush Life is impossible to fault. Tremendous stuff."
