At the time Miles Davis recorded these three 1951-1955 sessions, the trumpet player had just begun his soon-to-be spectacular career. As part of five milestone Prestige and Blue Note albums, these tracks features some of the most representative young lions of its time, including Sonny Rollins, Milt Jackson, J.J. Johnson, Ray Bryant, Oscar Pettiford, Charles Mingus and Art Blakey among others. This complete collection of studio recordings under the leadership of Davis, is dedicated to the memory of Jackie McLean, a tribute to one of the most misunderstood jazzmen in the history of modern jazz whose cohesive, solid phrasing and distinct, harsh-like sonority would make him into one of the most representative jazzmen of a blues-full hard bop style.
A true cry from the heart, piercing and ragged, Jackie McLeans tone has always been his strong point. David H. Rosenthal
