The title of this album refers to the two elementary components of jazz: the blues and the beat. The French horns, trumpets, trombones, saxophones, alto flute, bass flute and piccolo create a slightly unusual but very fresh and appealing "pop" sound. The "blue" mood of the blues is heard on the first six tracks - the A side of the original vinyl album - while the "B side" brings the stirring jazz beat.
