David Smith is a Canadian-born trumpeter currently residing in New York City. After studying in Toronto and at the Banff Centre for the Arts, he worked for a few years in the Toronto jazz scene. In 2000 he came to New York with a study grant from the Canada Council for the Arts, and before long began working in the New York jazz scene.
He can be heard weekly with the Howard Williams Jazz Orchestra in Greenwich Village, and in various other groups in and around the city. Among them are his own group,Thomson Kneeland's Kakalla, the Kim Bock Quartet, the Cecilia Coleman Quintet, the Alan Ferber Nonet, the Paul Carlon Octet, the Russ Spiegel Quintet, the Andrew Rathbun Big Band, the Yumiko Sunami Jazz Orchestra, the Sound Assembly, the Delphian Jazz Orchestra, Bill Mobley's Space Time Big Band and Numinous. He has performed at many of New York's most prestigious jazz clubs including the Blue Note, the Jazz Standard, Birdland and Smalls. He has also performed in many countries around the world, most recently touring Denmark in January of 2006. He is featured on a number of recordings including national broadcasts on CBC radio in Canada and Denmarks Radio in Denmark, and recordings for Fresh Sound New Talent with the Delphian Jazz Orchestra and the Alan Ferber Nonet.
