During the late Fifties, Detroit saw the emergence of some of the finest neo-bop jazzmen, among them Curtis Fuller and Sylvester Sonny Red Kyner, two of the most significant young-blood representatives of the movement. Fuller, a 23-year old disciple of trombonist J. J. Johnson, displayed, even then, full command of his horn, playing with a vibrato-less style, flowing conception and a slightly greater dynamic range than his mentor.
Sonny Red, 25-years-old at the time, was a Bird calling shouter, with a pungent attack, fierce drive and a truly Bird-inspired emotional strength. These 1957 quintet recordings amply illustrate the wealth of talent emerging from Detroit that left its invigorating mark on the New York scene in the late Fifties.
