After working for several Swing bands (Lester Young being his idol), in 1942 he moved to New York. Intent of pursuing a solo career, he began to frequent the small clubs on 52nd Street, home of the Be-Bop movement. Two years later, he formed, alongside Dizzy Gillespie, a quintet that soon became the sensation of the day. Still, the immature, undisciplined Charlie was fast becoming a misunderstood genius prone to all excesses with regards to food, alcohol, sex, drugs, whatever. Such tendencies soon began to undermine his psychological balance, leading to a life marked by irreversible self-destructon. He was on his way to become a living legend.
This collection brings together and in chronological order all the studio recording master takes made by Charlie Parker for the Dial label, i.e. the one originally selected at the time of issue on disc, plus another session under the name of Red Norvo And His Selected Sextet (CD 2/16-19).
