Chano Pozo

El Tambor De Cuba (3-CD Box Set + Book)

Tumbao Cuban Classics

3CD-Box Set with 142-page book: "El tambor de Cuba" (in Spanish and English)

A compilation without precedence: From the first hits of Chano Pozo as a composer in Havana 1939, until his determining presence in the exciting fusion of Afro-Cuban rhythms and be-bop jazz, or 'Cu-bop', originated. The most complete collection of Chano Pozo's work as composer and as performer.

There are more than 75 recordings, many of them rare and some previously unissued, with complete personel listing of each orchestra and precise dates, along with original anecdotes related by Mario Baúza, Dizzy Gillespie, Cecil Payne, Machito and others.

The books contains Chano Pozo's biography, an exciting story complemented by a large number of graphic documents and photos, many of which have never been published before now.

Press reviews

Chano Pozo: El Tambor De Cuba charts the career of the elusive Pozo and, along the way, illustrates the connection between American jazz, African rhythms and Cuban music in fascinating detail and with undeniable authority.

Tom Piazza, The New York Times

This very well-conceived release serves as a perfect tribute to the volatile and intense conguero-composer-singer and is essential to collectors of Afro-Cuban and Latin jazz.

Scott Yanow, LA Jazz Scene

Pierre-Jean Crittin, Vibrations/Latino (France/Suisse)

"The life and influence of this legendary figure has been meticulously and lovingly documented in a three-CD collection [...] the Pozo package includes a 143-page book [...]generously illustrated with historic photos and reproductions of vintage record labels. In an industry that often skimps on production quality, it's a delight to find a set that does justice to the artistic stature of its subject."

Agustín Gurza, Los Angeles Times
