New Sextet Sessions
Personnel:
Benny Goodman (cl), Terry Gibbs (vib), Paul Smith (p), Johnny Smith (g), Eddie Safranski (b), Sid Bulkin (d), Nancy Reed (vcl)
Reference: OCM CD 042
At the end of 1949, Benny Goodman dissolved his orchestra but soon he began to form a stable unit. His aim was to relieve his sextets mid-40s success with musicians as the great Teddy Wilson and young ones as vibraphonist Terry Gibbs, Mundell Lowe or Johnny Smith on guitars. This CD comprises almost all the New Sextet recordings for Columbia during his short but fruitful existence (1950-1952). Excellent & swinging music by this somewhat forgotten combo.
