Melancholy goes deep in Portugeuse culture. There is a word in Portugese, saudade, which describes that special combination of longing and melancholy. Fado is the musical expression of that feeling. It developed around the same time that the tango was developing in Argentina.
Within the world of fado, Amalia Rodrigues has achieved a pre-eminence surpassing even that of Carlos Gardel within that of tango. Such was the extent of her talent that, when entered (at the tender age of 18) into the 1938 Spring Contest to elect the annual Queen of Fado, all the other contestants refused to continue. From that day to this she has been the undisputed Rainha do Fado - the Queen of Fado. Her incomparable way of singing the fado and her Portugeuse beauty made her a heroine.
Blue Moon are now presenting for the very first time on CD her earliest recordings. The re-mastering has been undertaken very sensitively and the results are superb.
Whilst the 2 CDs are available individually, we recommend this 2 CD boxed set, which includes a 32 page booklet with an article on Amalia Rodrigues by J.Colina in Spanish, English and French and many original photographs.
