The Swedish pianist and composer, Nils Lindberg, (June 11, 1933, Uppsala, Sweden – February 20, 2022), was known as a jazz composer and musician, but was also active in other styles. Several of his works are written in a style that combines elements of jazz, folk music and classical music. Lindberg was an excellent pianist, arranger and composer, and was always at the forefront of Swedish jazz.

Nils Lindberg was an expert at combining Swedish folk songs with jazz, wrote classical music (including for the Swedish Radio Symphony and the Hanover Symphony), appeared with the Duke Ellington Orchestra in October 1973, accompanied Judy Garland during a tour in Scandinavia and was the leader of the Stockholm School Music Big Band.

He studied musicology at Uppsala University from 1952 to 1956 and then composition at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm from 1956 to 1960, the year of his graduation. While still a student, he began playing professionally with Benny Bailey (1957–1958), Anders Burman (1958), Ove Lind (1959), Lars Gullin and Putte Wickman. He played with Duke Ellington in his 1973 European tour, with Mel Tormé the following year, and recorded with vocalist Karin Krog in 1976. In the 1980s he made several tours aound Europe and Brazil, as well as the United States, where he was also invited to give conferences. In 1986, Nils Lindberg performed his own music at the funeral of former Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme.

Several of Nils Lindberg's best orchestral works have been released, including "7 Dalecarlian Paintings", "Lapponian Suite", "Dalecarlian Reflections" and Mythological Portraits. His album "Saxes Galore" received the 'Gold Record' award in 1979 from the "Orkesterjournalen" magazine as the best Swedish jazz album of the year.

In June 2006, Nils Lindberg was awarded the H.M. the King, Litteris et artibus, for his artistic contributions as a composer and pianist. 

Nils Lindberg died on February 20, 2022, at the age of 88.
