In the early 1990s, these three musicians in their twenties met in New York City, where they shared a common thirst to play jazz in the vitality of swing, to soak up its spirit and learn the letter. Each went on to establish themselves under their own names, leading individual successful careers: drummer Ali Jackson, a Detroit native, for more than a decade with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra under Wynton Marsalis; the double bass player Omer Avital at the head of groups drawing part of their inspiration from his Jewish, Yemeni and Moroccan roots; and pianist Aaron Goldberg as brilliant as a soloist and accompanist, broken to the liveliest jazz spirit with Joshua Redman.
