Perico Sambeat
Born on July 23 1962, Valencia, Spain. Sambeat studied music formally, favouring the alto saxophone. After playing jazz locally his reputation gradually spread throughout Spain and by the late 80s his international reputation was established. A powerful and exciting saxophonist who has been likened to Phil Woods for his fire and intensity, Sambeat has been important in bringing together jazz and flamenco, not as a gimmick but with integrity towards both forms. One of the best of many fine jazz musicians to come from Spain, Sambeat has often worked with visitors from overseas, among them Brad Mehldau, Mark Turner and Kurt Rosenwinkel, with whom he recorded in 1993 and 1995.
